The three feeding stations, in river order

Tanjung Harapan is the first stop, about 1.5–2 hours from Kumai Source: indicative. Its feeding is usually in the afternoon, which makes it the natural target for day one.

Pondok Tanggui sits further upstream. Feeding there is usually in the morning, so boats spend the night nearby and walk to the platform after breakfast.

Camp Leakey is the end of the line, up the blackwater tributary. It has an information centre about the camp's history and the afternoon feeding draws the most visitors. Camp Leakey was founded in 1971 by Biruté Mary Galdikas Source: confirmed.

How to choose between 2, 3 and 4 days

2 days, 1 night fits a tight schedule but forces a trade-off: you reach two stations, usually Tanjung Harapan and Pondok Tanggui, and Camp Leakey often drops out because the return cruise is long.

3 days, 2 nights reaches all three stations with time on deck in between. It is what most operators sell and what this builder treats as the reference.

4 days, 3 nights adds a slow day: a guided walk on the Camp Leakey trails, a visit to Pondok Ambung research station or Sekonyer village, and a second chance at a station where the orangutans did not show.

Flights shape the first and last day

Pangkalan Bun has direct flights from Jakarta, Surabaya and Semarang Source: confirmed, and the road to Kumai harbour takes about half an hour Source: indicative. For the 3-day trip, a return flight after about 14:00 on the last day is comfortable. If your international connection is tight, spend the night before in Jakarta or Surabaya; the route finder for getting to Tanjung Puting shows the options.

Questions travellers ask

Can I do Tanjung Puting in one day?

A day trip by speedboat to one station is sometimes offered, but you lose the river at dusk, the night on deck and usually Camp Leakey. The klotok is the reason to come.

What time should my flight land at Pangkalan Bun?

Before about 12:00 gives a relaxed start for the 15:00 feeding at Tanjung Harapan. Later landings work, but the first feeding becomes doubtful.

Are feeding times fixed?

They are fairly stable but not an official timetable. Your guide confirms the day’s schedule.
