The crew who run it
A typical klotok has a captain, a cook, a deckhand and a guide. The guide should hold a licence recognised by the park; ask to see it. The cook prepares three meals a day on board, usually rice, vegetables, tempeh, fish or chicken, and fruit, and can adapt to vegetarian or other diets with notice.
Sleeping on deck
At night the crew moves the table aside and lays thin mattresses with mosquito nets on the upper deck. Some boats have side curtains for rain and privacy; a few have a separate cabin. The night is full of insect sound, and the boat moors in quiet stretches of river, so most people sleep well after a day outdoors.
Water, power and the bathroom
The bathroom is usually a small room at the stern with a toilet and a bucket or simple shower. Ask where washing water comes from and whether drinking water is in large refillable containers rather than single-use bottles. Some boats have a generator in the evening for lights and charging. The packing list for a klotok trip covers power banks and torches.
The way a crew handles waste and plastic says a lot about the operator; the ethical tour check turns that into questions you can send before booking.

Questions travellers ask
Is there air conditioning on a klotok?
Almost never. The deck is open to the river breeze, which keeps nights comfortable. A few premium boats have a cabin with a fan.
Is a klotok safe?
Klotoks move slowly on calm rivers. Ask for life jackets for every guest, including children’s sizes, and check that they are on board before departure.
Can I charge my phone?
Usually in the evening when the generator runs. Bring a power bank to be safe.
